Television: The Worker (1965, 1969/70, 1978)

Interesting McGee Facts
  • The first Labour Exchange Clerk of "The Worker" wasn't Henry McGee but Percy Herbert, who played "Mr. Whittaker".
  • "The Worker" was revived twice. The first time in 1970 when two series were produced for ATV and in 1978 when "The Worker" was included within "Bruce Forsyth's "Big Night Out".
  • The Labour Exchange was situated in Weybridge.
  • Charlie Drake was described as being "a little sh*t" by former Rutle Barry Wong

980 Jobs in twenty years. Will Weybridge ever be the same?

The Worker was based around a Charlie Drake idea, of the ultimately unemployable man. The concept being that "The Worker" (Charlie), who whilst willing to work, was actually, incapable of holding down a full job. In fact, Charlie is  incapable of holding down a job longer than a day.

This, of course, exasperated, the clerk at the labour exchange. Henry McGee made this role his own in the five(ish) series of "The Worker". The shows involved a variety of scenarios and situations with a varying cast, but it was always the Labour Exchange, that acted as a central pivotal point for the shows stories. Henry McGee played that clerk (Mr. Pugh) for a majority of the time on this show and then  established a good working relationship with Charlie Drake in many of Charlie's subsequent shows/comedy specials
