Television: Tell It To The Marines (1959-60)

Interesting McGee Facts
  • This is Henry's first major television role (we think)
  • Ronald Hines (Marine Corporal Surtees) went on to play Wendy Craig's Husband in "Not in front of the Children"
  •

Lieutenant Raleigh (Henry McGee) and Leading Seaman White (Alan White), getting caught up in kinds of shenanigans in "Tell it to the Marines"

"Tell it to the Marines" was a sit-com based on the rivalry that exists between the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines, after a crack squad of marines was stationed with a Royal Navy crew. The series ran for 30 episodes and revolved around the petty arguments and joking between the two forces. Main characters where Leading Seaman White (Alan White) and Marine Corporal Surtees (Ronald Hines). Henry played L/S White's superior officer Lt Raleigh, which often brought him into conflict with his Marine counterpart Major Howard (Jack Allen).

The series was Jack Hylton Production for Associated Redifusion, who exclusively provided all Associated-Redifusions  entertainment. At the time, Granada TV, were having a great deal of success with another, services based, series "The Army Game" (Alfie Bass, Bill Frasier, Charles Hawtrey, Norman Rossington, Michael Medwin, Bernard Bresslaw, Harry Fowler) and "Tell it to the Marines" was going to be Associated-Redifusions answer to the other 'services sit-com'. It failed to capture the publics imagination.

Devised by Ted Lewis and written by Eric Paice, Malcolm A Hulke, Brad Ashton, Dick Vosburgh. Directed by Milo Lewis who was quoted as saying "...viewers should find it quite amusing".
