An Episode from Series 7

Interesting Facts about this episode
  • Felix Bowness plays a shop steward from "Central Services" and delivers the line "I'm not from Light Entertainment.....do I look like a comedian".... this gets riotous laughs as he was the BBC's main warm-up comedian for many a year prior to landing the role of Jockey 'Fred Quilly' in Hi-de-Hi
  • Henry worked with Eric Sykes in one of his many 'Silent Movie' comedy's "Mr H Is Late"
  • Look out for a fine cameo role from Les Dawson as the cleaning man vacuuming  the DG's office as the credits roll.

Henry plays a BBC Mandarin from Light Entertainment named 'Roger'. Henry's department has had a collection in commemoration of 20 years service from Eric and Hattie to the BBC and the trio venture to the 6th Floor to get the DG to present the Gold Clock to Eric; in this classic "Sykes" episode having a quiet dig at the bureaucracy and madness of the BBC

Eric (Eric Sykes) and his sister Hattie (the simply marvelous Hattie Jaques) have been providing loyal service to the BBC for 20 years. Roger (Henry McGee) arranges for a meeting with the DG (Hugh Burden) in order for the DG to present the Gold Carriage clock that the Light Entertainment Department have bought for the couple. The DG is hopeless, he doesn't know who Eric is and gets him confused with Eric Morcambe at one point (and to Hattie "..you must be the one with the short fat hairy legs"). The whole episode revolves around the apparent idiosyncrasy of the DG, with our Henry putting the DG right.

The show is an excuse to put some old clips together from old Eric Sykes shows (dating back to 1960 and his first series for the BBC). Clips from the shows with Ronnie Barker and Peter Sellers are shown, as well as the classic moments where Eric gets his toe stuck in the bath tap and the wonderful scene with Hattie Jacques as a Bus Conductor doing the "Air Hostess Introduction" to the passengers on the London Master.

As the show comes to a close. Roger (Henry) asks the DG if he will perform the task of presenting the clock to Eric and Hattie. Confusion gets in there somewhere and the DG thinks the clock is meant for him. He accepts the clock and the trio (Eric, Hattie and Henry) retreat .

The Trio Eric (Eric Sykes), Hattie (Hattie Jacques) and Roger (Henry McGee) enter the DG's office.   Roger, tries to explain why they have arranged for the meeting.

Eric points out the brand of BBC cigar ("props") to Hattie.
Roger tries again to expalin the valuable contribution of Eric and Hattie's work to the BBC light Entertainment output

...but we think he is on a loser. The Trio try to humour the DG as he reminisces about the grand days of radio

Roger tries to get the DG (Hugh Burden)  to present the clock to Eric, but the DG accepts the gift for himself..." I will treasure it always"

Lets get out whilst the going is good... you do want another series don't you Eric?
