Television: 100 TV Moments From Hell (2000)

Interesting McGee Facts
  • Benny Hill was sacked by Thames Television in 1989. He died in 1992.
  • It is rumoured that Benny kept his promise to leave his millions to his favourite Hill's Angels and his supporting cast (including Bob Todd and Henry). A piece of paper, in Benny's handwriting was found in the attic of Benny's house detailing those wishes, but wasn't witnessed or signed.

Henry McGee commenting on the, supposed,  political incorrectness of Benny Hill and Benny's reaction to his appaling sacking by Thames Television.

In 2000, UK Television Channel 4 broadcast the "100 TV Moments from Hell" show. The concept being, that  the over a period of three hours, television viewers would be subjected to the 100 moments of embarrassing, cringing television. The "Sexism of Benny Hill".  was at number 73 in this chart.

Henry was interviewed and clips were used as a commentary around a short sequence of Benny Hill clips (all exclusively taken from "The Best of Benny Hill" compilation film that Thames put together in 1974 and that has been released in numerous guises since then.

On Benny's supposed sexism, henry was quoted as....

"Benny was never sexist. All he was showing was the hopelessness of men's sexually fantasies"
And on the subject of Benny Hill's sacking by Thames television.

"When Benny was told there was to be no more shows, he was really shocked"

Whilst the ranking of each entry was selected by viewers of Channel 4 (via their website), the actual list was composed many months before by the production staff. The show itself is an interesting compilation, including such great moments as

  • #98 Play Guitar With Ulf Goran (ITV, 1974)
  • #81 Kevin Keegan tumbles off a bike on BBC1's Superstars (1976)
  • #31 Norway's Eurovision Song Contest flops (although we here at Bemuddlement have a very big soft spot for Jan Tygens "Mil Oder Mil"

The number one spot was taken by Richard Madely's impression of Ali G on his morning TV show
